Pancakes started with green.
I’d noticed that a lot of the paintings I was making around this time seemed to build themselves around one dominant color, even when there were a dozen other colors fighting for space. For this one, I knew I wanted that color to be a loud, bright green. Beyond that, I didn’t really know where it was going.
I was in a very ’90s alternative mood while making it—garage bands, music, that whole energy. I started sprinkling little pieces of music symbolism throughout the painting, but I didn’t want them to become the subject. They’re just there to be discovered.
The rest was a strange combination of winging it and knowing exactly what I was doing. I knew I was building something. I just didn’t know where I was building to.
And then there’s the name.
Why Pancakes?
Because it makes me feel good. Pancakes make me feel good. Why does it need to make any more sense than that? There’s something wonderfully punk about naming a painting simply because you can.
But there’s another layer to it. Pancakes was my wife’s nickname when she was a kid, and the musical spirit running through this painting comes from the same kind of music she loves.
So somehow this loud green, chaotic, ’90s-garage-band-looking thing became Pancakes.
And honestly, I can’t imagine it being called anything else.
