Derek S. Clarke is a contemporary abstract expressionist painter from Austin, Texas. The work is influenced by music and the process is closely tied to the act of listening and observing how auditory experience is linked to memory and emotion. Because each sound, instrument, timbre, and tone have a unique motion as well as color, this informs the movements and color choices. You will see contrasting small intentional marks, bold spills, and everything in between throughout the work reflecting those sounds. The goal is to share the artist's unique visual and auditory reality with others.
Flow, rhythm and variation translate from sound into the physical making of the paintings and the final works. The mark making in the work is related to Abstract Expressionism but also to the patina of urban space with imprints, sprayed and dripped surfaces, overlays of bold color and remnants of passing gestures.
